Dr Emma R Woodward

Emma WoodwardI studied medicine at the University of Cambridge. Whilst undertaking my medical studies, I achieved a PhD in hereditary cancer genetics, graduating in 1999 with MB BChir PhD. Following general adult medicine rotations in London, Lausanne and Belfast I achieved MRCP in 2003.  Knowing that I wished to pursue a career in hereditary cancer genetics I commenced Specialist Registrar Training in Clinical Genetics in the West Midlands. During this time I was awarded a prestigious NIHR Clinician Scientist Award where I studied the hereditary predisposition to renal cancer. I achieved my CCT in Clinical Genetics in 2008 combining research with an honorary consultant position. In 2015 I accepted a consultant position in the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. My clinical practice includes all aspects of hereditary cancer predisposition including the more common cancers such as breast, ovarian and bowel cancer, in addition to rarer cancers, for example endocrine tumours and renal cancer. I am pursuing research projects in the hereditary aspects of thyroid cancers and work collaboratively on projects investigating hereditary aspects of breast cancer and also endocrine tumour predisposition. I have more than 30 peer-reviewed publications including both as first, senior and co-author. I am the current Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee for the British Society of Genetic Medicine and, in 2016, was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.
